Email message headers are a detailed description of the path your email took as it traveled across all the different servers. These messages are extremely useful for pinpointing any particular issue regarding the transmission of your emails.
Below are instructions on how to access your email message headers from various email hosts and clients.
Webmail Providers
Paubox
- Login to your Paubox webmail interface.
- Click on the message that you want to view the message header.
- Once you click the message, the preview pane will pop up below, click on the drop-down arrow in the right-hand corner.
- The email message header will pop up.
Gmail
- Log in to Gmail
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top of the message pane.
- Select Show Original.
- The full headers will appear in a new window. Click Download Original, Download S/MIME Original, or Download Decrypted.
Hotmail
- Log in to your Hotmail account.
- Select Inbox from the left-side menu.
- Right-click the message you'd like to view headers for and select View Message Source.
The full headers will appear in a new window.
Yahoo
- Log in to your Yahoo! Mail account.
- Select the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the Actions dropdown and select View Full Header.
The full headers will appear in a new window.
Email Clients
Apple Mail
- Open Apple Mail.
- Click on the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Go to the View menu.
- Select Message > All Headers.
The full headers will appear in the window below your inbox.
Outlook
- Open Outlook.
- Open the message by double-clicking on it.
- Click on the File tab.
- Click on Properties.
- In the Properties dialog box, the headers appear in the Internet headers box.
Thunderbird
- Open Thunderbird.
- Click on the message you'd like to view headers for.
- In the preview pane of the message, click on More, and then click on View Source.
The full headers will appear in a new window.
