Migrating emails using Thunderbird (Windows)

To migrate your emails to a Paubox Webmail (Hosted Mail) account, follow the instructional guide below.

Before proceeding with your email migration, please check to make sure you have the following:

  1. Thunderbird downloaded and installed on your computer. The link to download Thunderbird can be found here. Thunderbird is preferable because this software is completely free!
  2. Login information (email address and password) for your current/old email account and your Paubox email account. Both accounts need to be set to IMAP. 
  3. The Incoming and Outgoing server settings for your current/old email account. You might have to contact your email hosting provider for this information.

Part 1: Setting up your old/current email account in Thunderbird

  1. Click on Local Folders and under the category Accounts and in the section Create a new account, and select Email.

  2. Select Skip this and use my existing email.

  3. Fill out the fields: Your name, Email address, and Password. Then click Continue. kb_Thunderbird-fields
  4. Click on Manual config when the option presents itself. Then enter in the necessary incoming and outgoing email settings. If you do not know your email server settings, please contact your email provider. Then click on Re-Test and then Done.

  5. Your old/current email account is now added to Thunderbird.

Part 2: Setting up your Paubox email account in Thunderbird

  1. Repeat steps 1 and 2 from Part 1 (see above).
  2. Fill out the fields: Your name, Email address, and Password. Then click Continue.

  3. Click on Manual config when the option presents itself. The email settings for Paubox is below:
    • Incoming server hostname: m.paubox.com
    • Incoming server port: 993
    • SSL: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication: Normal password
    • Outgoing server hostname: m.paubox.com
    • Outgoing server port: 587
    • SSL: STARTTLS
    • Authentication: Normal password

  4. Click on Re-test and then Done when you are ready. Your Paubox email account is now added to Thunderbird.
  5. You can now go to the main Thunderbird menu and open up all the folder for both your Paubox email account and your old email account. To do so just click on blue circular icon to the left of your email address (see image below).

Part 3: Copying and pasting emails

  1. Click on your old/current email inbox folder.

  2. Select all the email messages in the inbox. You can hit the Control and A keys on your keyboard to select all email messages in the inbox folder.
  3. Right click on your mouse, and select Copy To, select your Paubox email account, and then select InboxDo not select Move To, this will cause issues for your email migration.

  4. Repeat steps 1-3 above for your Drafts, Sent, Junk, and Trash Folder.
  5. For sub-folders in your inbox do the following
    1. Select your Paubox email account on Thunderbird. Right click on the mouse and click on New Folder.

    2. Give your new folder the same name as it is in your old/current email account.
    3. Select the sub-folder in your old/current email account. Right click on your mouse, and select Copy To, select your Paubox email account, and then select the proper sub-folder you want to paste the emails to. Do not select Move To, this will cause issues for your email migration.
    4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all of your subfolders you wish to copy and paste over to your Paubox email account.
