Create DLP rules with DLP AI Chat

Paubox DLP rules define what to catch in your outbound and inbound mail. Instead of configuring one manually, describe what you want to catch in plain English to DLP AI Chat, and it drafts a rule for you to review and save.

How to create a rule

  1. Log in to your Paubox dashboard
  2. Navigate to Paubox Email Suite > DLP > Rules
  3. Select New rule (or Edit with chat on an existing rule to revise it)
  4. Describe what you want to catch, for example: "Detect outbound emails containing US Social Security numbers"
  5. Answer any clarifying questions, such as direction (inbound, outbound, or both) and scan scope (the whole email, or specific fields like the subject and body)
  6. Review the rule card and select Save rule

If you don't have any rules set up yet, opening Rules starts you directly in DLP AI Chat, with example prompts to choose from.

Keyword rules vs. AI rules

DLP AI Chat decides which type of rule your request needs. A keyword rule looks for a literal match, like a specific phrase or number format. An AI rule evaluates intent when a literal match won't work, like flagging any email that names a patient alongside a diagnosis. Both rule types appear together in your Rules list, and you can filter by direction or scan location.

What happens when a rule matches

When a message matches a rule, Paubox quarantines it and includes a plain-English explanation of why it was caught. The quarantine dashboard also shows which rule matched, so admins can review the decision or adjust the rule directly.
