Inbound security: Update MX record

When you set up inbound security with Paubox (available with Plus or Premium subscriptions), you'll need to update your MX records in your domain host settings to ensure your incoming email is routed through Paubox for security and scanning.

Updating MX records

Here are instructions for updating MX records for common domain hosts:

If you don't see your domain host above, you can follow the general instructions below or visit your domain host's help center for instructions to update an MX record.

General step-by-step guide

  1. Log in to your domain host
  2. Navigate to your domain host settings. This could be called:
    • DNS
    • DNS records
    • Advanced settings
    • DNS zone editor
    • Name server management
    • Control panel
  1. Find the domain that you're connecting to Paubox
  2. Under your DNS records, check if you have an existing record that is Type: MX. If you already have an MX record, follow the instructions to update that record.

Update an existing MX record (for Google Workspace accounts)

If you use Google Workspace, you will likely have 5 existing MX records. Each record is labeled with a priority number (priority 1, priority 5, priority 10).

  1. Locate an MX record that is the lowest priority (priority 10) and edit that record
  2. In the text field, replace the value with the text supplied by Paubox during your setup
  3. Delete all other existing MX records (this is essential for mail to flow through Paubox)

Update an existing MX record (for Microsoft 365 accounts)

If you use Microsoft 365, you will likely have 1 existing MX record.

  1. Locate the MX record and edit that record
  2. In the text field, replace the value with the text supplied by Paubox during your setup

Note: If there are multiple MX records, edit the record of the lowest priority (usually "priority 10") and replace the existing value with the appropriate Paubox mx value. Save; then delete all other MX records (this is essential for mail to flow properly through Paubox).
